As with all characters in the Indie smash hit Undertale, there are lots of little details to learn about Alphys.

You are watching: Who does alphys have a crush on

Undertale is, obviously, a vibe. This indie hit has a reputation for representation of all types who feel forced into the underground of society. Undertale builds social interaction into its gameplay, and although curiosity will drive many a player to try their hand at a Genocide run, Undertale"s message is clear in its prioritization of kindness and forgiveness. Although it has its charismatic heroes, this game also makes a case for the little guy, for the gentle souls, for eccentrics and oddballs.

Alphys is one of those oddballs. Undertale makes it easy for players to identify with Alphys, despite, or maybe because of, her flaws. Like most humans, she makes numerous mistakes, some with terrible consequences, and her reaction to those mistakes is to shut herself off from the people who care about her the most.

Despite this, the combination of her shyness and passion makes her a deeply endearing character. Whether the player knows an Alphys or is an Alphys themselves, it is worth Sparing a minute (pun intended) to learn more about her.

Bratty and Catty talking about Alphys in Undertale
Before Alphys was the Royal Scientist of the Underground, she lived on the same street as Bratty and Catty and the three monsters were tight. Alphys would take them on trips to the dump to show them the cool things she would collect there.

Bratty and Catty thought of Alphys like a big sister, and given that she inadvertently helped them set up their dumpster diving business, she definitely played a mentoring role to these two besties. But by the time the player meets Bratty and Catty, they mention that they, like everyone else, haven"t seen much of Alphys since she became the Royal Scientist.

Alphys and Mettaton in the quiz show in Undertale
There are several monsters in the Underground who mention the existence of alternate universes and timelines, most notably the fan-favorite character Sans, and the mysterious W.D. Gaster and his equally elusive followers.

It should come as no surprise that Alphys follows this trend among scientific monsters. Upon first meeting Alphys, Mettaton shows up and begins to quiz the player; one of his questions is "who does Alphys have a crush on?" If the player answers that they do not know, Mettaton will respond that this is correct, as Alphys has a crush on an unknowable being that does not exist. Alphys responds to this burn by protesting that this unmet being might exist in an alternate timeline, where, according to her research, she might be able to meet them.

Frisk reads Mettaton
Mettaton is an important figure in Alphys" life for many reasons, most obviously because she builds him his bodies. But their relationship doesn"t have the creator-creation power dynamic at all. This may be because they were friends before Mettaton was ever a show-bot.

Mettaton was previously a ghost with big dreams of being a TV star for humans. As a ghost, he formed a fan club for humans and became friends with the only other monster in the underground to join it: anime-loving Alphys.

Alphys in her polka dot dress in Undertale
Alphys is female in the game and a great example of both a high-ranking female scientist and a queer icon in gaming. But according to a book of Undertale concept art, Alphys was originally designed to be male.

Creator Toby Fox did not like the idea of the male Alphys and added some eyelashes to her design (plus her excellent polka-dot dress) turning her into the version of Alphys that players know and love.

Throughout the game, the player can go on dates with a few of the monsters. Alphys is one of them. While on the date, the player role plays with Alphys, pretending that she"s speaking to another fascinating character, Undyne, instead.

Alphys will claim that she has excellent dating and kissing skills, based on her experience with dating video games. A character describing her simulated dating experiences while role-playing a conversation during a simulated dating sequence within a role-playing video game is a level of meta that is quintessentially Undertale.

If the player talks to Bratty and Catty behind the MTT Resort, they can find out all sorts of interesting tidbits about Alphys. Her former friends have no compunction about spilling the details of her one-sided love life. They mention that Alphys thought Asgore was a "super cutie."

They also mention that Alphys may have made Mettaton just to impress Asgore, although there are many other reasons for Mettaton"s inception that B&C might not be aware of. Still, Alphys"s supposed creation of Mettaton"s soul was very interesting to Asgore, or as Catty puts it: "SUPER relevant to his hobbies."

Toby Fox is as adept a game composer as he is a game designer and programmer. Undertale is full of Easter eggs and inside jokes, and that includes the music he composed. Like many other character-driven games, Undertale is full of leitmotifs: a musical theme or tidbit that sonically represents a character.

Toby Fox uses a remixed piece of Alphys"s theme song as a leitmotif during a portion of the song that plays in the player"s final battle with Undyne. Alphys" quirky and gentle motif appearing in the middle of Battle Against A True Hero serves to highlight their close romantic relationship.

Alphys worked in a secret lab that the player can gain access to late in the game. In this lab are memos describing her experiments with infusing monsters with Determination mined from human souls. The player also encounters the results of those experiments: the Amalgamates, monsters that were melted together as a result of too much Determination.

If the player ventures farther into the lab, they discover a room filled with yellow flowers, and memos referring to "vessels." Eventually, they will find memos detailing Alphys" use of a golden flower in Asgore"s room as her chosen vessel for Determination, after which the flower disappears. Given what the player knows about Asriel"s past, that flower is clearly Flowey.

Before Alphys was appointed Royal Scientist, the role was performed by W.D. Gaster, a character who has, mostly, disappeared by the time the events of the game take place. The position remained vacant for some time before Alphys was given the job.

While Alphys is clearly a dedicated, intelligent, and inventive scientist, she was given the Royal Scientist job under false pretenses. She told Asgore that she had created a robot with a soul - Mettaton. In fact, she only created the robot. Mettaton"s soul was actually a ghost who bonded with the robot body to become corporeal.

While traveling through Snowdin, Papyrus, arguably one of the best characters of the game, will test Frisk by having the player complete a series of puzzles while walking across the snow. He eventually offers the player a puzzle with colored panels on the ground, and a series of insanely complex instructions to follow in order to pass through.

The puzzle malfunctions so that the player can walk through without any effort, and if the player looks closely, a box that looks suspiciously like Mettaton is stationed in the corner of the puzzle screen. The robot and its malfunction are two clues that Alphys was actually responsible for this puzzle"s design.
