MSNBC host Brian Williams on Friday accused Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis of "mismanagement and ghoulish denialism" amid the COVID-19 pandemic. During the latest edition of The 11th Hour With Brian Williams, the TV host was discussing immigration at the Southern border and said both Republican governors would likely use the topic as a distraction from the pandemic. "Governor Abbott, like DeSantis in Florida, would rather talk about anything other than the rising death tolls stemming from mismanagement and ghoulish denialism during a pandemic," Williams said. The host added: "Both men, both governors, face tough reelection campaigns. Both men just want to be loved by Donald Trump and the people who love him." Williams" comments come as COVID-19 continues to ravage Texas and Florida. DeSantis has threatened local governments in Florida with fines if they try to impose vaccine mandates—while Abbott issued an executive order levying …

In Their Own Words: Why Health Experts Say Elementary Schools Should Open

March 2, 2021 by

Scientists and doctors who study infectious disease in children largely agreed, in a recent New York Times survey about school openings, that elementary school students should be able to attend in-person school now. With safety measures like masking and opening windows, the benefits outweigh the risks, the majority of the 175 respondents said. In some ways, they were more supportive of broad reopening than the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was in recently published guidelines. But the experts pointed to the large share of schools in the United States and worldwide that have opened with minimal in-school spread while using such precautions. Below are a representative range of their comments on key topics, including the risks to children of being out of school; the risks to teachers of being in school; whether vaccines are necessary before opening schools; how to achieve distance in crowded classrooms; what kind of ventilation is needed; and whether their own …

Sandra Bland Death May Lead to Disciplinary Action, Sheriff Says

July 25, 2015 by

HEMPSTEAD, Tex. — The Texas sheriff whose policies have come under intense criticism in the aftermath of the jail-cell hanging death of Sandra Bland says he is seriously considering disciplinary action against jail staff members for not fulfilling state requirements for mental health training. In a nearly 45-minute interview in his office on Friday, Sheriff R. Glenn Smith of Waller County said he was continuing to review the chain of events that ended with the discovery of Ms. Bland’s body in her jail cell on July 13. Looking back, Sheriff Smith said, he regrets that Ms. Bland — who officials say told them after she arrived at the jail that she had once tried to kill herself — was not placed on a suicide watch. “It’s very obvious to me now, with what happened,” he said, adding, “I absolutely wish” she had been watched. Ms. Bland, 28, was booked into the county jail on July 10 after being arrested in a confrontational traffic stop by a state trooper who said she had changed …

A Cool Trudeau Rebuffs Conflict Charges. Will Canadians Buy His Story?

July 30, 2020 by

TORONTO — There was no corruption, no conflict of interest, just a government and prime minister working around the clock to save lives and livelihoods during a pandemic. That was Justin Trudeau’s message on Thursday to Canadians, who for the past month have lifted their heads from the exhausting struggle with the coronavirus to watch a growing political scandal over his government’s decision to award a hefty no-bid contract to a charity that has ties with his family. “Nothing of this program was in any way going to benefit any members of my family,” the prime minister said during a rare virtual appearance before the standing finance committee of the Canadian Parliament. “I was not in a conflict of interest.” The highly anticipated session, which stretched for 90 minutes, had elements of drama — heated exchanges, baiting questions and even a power outage during a storm over the chairman’s home. But Mr. Trudeau predictably kept his cool, displaying his well-honed political …

Speaking on Charity Scandal, Trudeau Adopts a Now-Familiar Tone of Contrition

July 14, 2020 by

After digging in his heels for days, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada changed tack on Monday and apologized for taking part in a decision to award a no-bid government contract to a charity deeply connected to his family. The apology came four days after it was revealed that the prime minister’s mother and brother had received more than $200,000 over four years to give speeches at events for the development organization, called the WE Charity , which had been awarded a government contract to oversee the disbursement of hundreds of millions of dollars of student grants. “I made a mistake in not recusing myself immediately from the discussions given our family’s history, and I’m sincerely sorry about not having done that,” said Mr. Trudeau from outside his Ottawa home, during one of the briefings he has given regularly since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. At Monday’s news conference, the virus took a back seat to a sustained grilling from reporters about the …

Dispute Over Sandra Bland’s Mental State Follows Death in a Texas Jail

July 22, 2015 by

HEMPSTEAD, Tex. — A 28-year-old woman whose arrest this month during a traffic stop ended with her hanging death in a county jail cell told officials that she tried last year to kill herself, the Texas sheriff who oversees the jail said on Wednesday. But the jailers did not put her on suicide watch, and her family’s lawyer said that relatives had no evidence that she had ever tried to commit suicide or struggled with depression. The back-and-forth over the mental state of the woman, Sandra Bland , came a day after Texas authorities released a dashboard camera video showing how a stop for changing lanes without signaling escalated into a shouting match and struggle between Ms. Bland, who was African-American, and a white state trooper, Brian T. Encinia . Some legal experts who reviewed the video raised questions about whether Ms. Bland , who was moving to Hempstead from the Chicago area to take a job at a local college, should have ever been arrested. “This whole thing …

Scientists race to harvest ice cores as glaciers melt

September 13, 2021 by

Scientists are racing to collect ice cores along with long-frozen records they hold of climate cycles as global warming melts glaciers and ice sheets. Some say they are running out of time. And, in some cases, it’s already too late. Late last year, German-born chemist Margit Schwikowski and a team of international scientists attempted to gather ice cores from the Grand Combin glacier, high on the Swiss-Italian border, for a United Nations -backed climate monitoring effort. In 2018, they had scouted the site by helicopter and drilled a shallow test core. The core was in good shape, said Ms Schwikowski: It had well-preserved atmospheric gases and chemical evidence of past climates, and ground-penetrating radar showed a deep glacier. Not all glaciers in the Alps preserve both summer and winter snowfall; if all went as planned, these cores would have been the oldest to date that did, she said. But in the two years it took for the scientists to return with a full …

The Best Movies of 2014

See more: Bullet For My Valentine Don T Need You Lyrics, Bullet For My Valentine

This was not a great year for film, particularly when compared to 2013. I’m not sure a single movie I saw would have cracked the top five of last year’s perform . The summer blockbuster season was less disappointing than it’s frequently been of late, but the final quarter of the year was a considerable letdown. Don’t get me wrong: There were a lot of good movies this year, just not a lot of great ones. As always, the usual caveats apply: I wasn’t able to see every movie that I’d like to have seen, so absence from the list may suggest one I missed. (This is particularly true of documentaries, of which I missed many.) Finally, the particular order of the list changed several times over the course of its writing, and will doubtless continue changing in my head long after publication. Let’s get to it. 1. A Most Violent Year Coming on the heels of Margin Call and All Is Lost , the movie establishes J.C. Chandor as perhaps the most talented American writer/director still …
