Rotten flesh is useless compared to all other items like it. You could eat it, but then it makes your hunger bar deplete. You could give it to wolfs to make them breed, but other meats already do that. So what is the point of rotten flesh? Those are the only two things you can do with it and it gets outclassed by other items. What would be a way for the developers to add a purpose to rotten flesh? What are your thoughts on this?


There are early game starts where rotten flesh has kept me alive.

Also, as you mention, it makes great dog food.

Finally, it's a great trade item for villagers.

You can trade it with villagers to get emeralds. I just wanted to add to your list, it's really not a great trade unless you have a zombie grinder.

How you use rotten flesh to replenish your hunger bar is you wait until you're really low (less than 4 shanks) then eat a bunch at once. It'll get you back up to 10 shanks then count down to 8 or 8.5, which is an improvement over 4. You can even heal slowly with it, but you have to eat 1 more every time you drop to 8.5 shanks and you only get to heal 2 half-hearts for each rotten flesh you eat (3 half-hearts before 1.9).

It's only advantage is how easy it is to get a surplus of it. It's emergency food.

Feeding dogs heals them; they breed only at full health.

It's better to use as dog food when you don't have much good meat for yourself. Also, it's easier to get than other meats if you make a grinder out of a zombie spawner.

You're right, it is a bit useless because of oversight/poor decision making.

It (along with spider eyes) from what I gather are intended as emergency items that you can use to boost your hunger just enough to allow yourself to heal... which itself is a result of the fact that you completely stop healing after you drop below 90% energy rather than tapering off.

This was made less useful because of hunger changes... however spider eyes were impacted more by those changes. Initially, regeneration didn't to sap saturation, and this is why spider eyes worked. However they introduced the saturation sapping (and then increased it in 1.9!)... the result of spider eyes is this:

Poison yourself in exchange for saturation and energy

Heal from having sufficient energy

Saturation decreases from healing

Energy depletes from low saturation

I'm not sure if this actually results in a gain, but it probably only would if you already had low health to begin with since poison can't kill you on its own. Both it and rotten flesh seem gimmicky in that you get the most bonus out of it by binge eating it (especially at low energy+health) since the negative effects don't stack.

Also silly is that once your saturation is depleted your energy will fully drain unless you eat again... you'd think that it would drain energy AS you exert yourself and only continue if you continue to do so (like if there was a partial saturation increase when you lose energy).
