An album from Tech that rarely ever gets talked about. In my opinion it's pretty overlooked, which could be due to the beats, but I personally like them. The album as a whole has a dark, dreamy sound that would seem like it's coming from the west, but it's coming from the midwest.. WTF right? The laid back vibe works really well with Tech's bizarre fast rapping style. He sounds much different than his later on stuff. I prefer early Tech more, not because his topics are different, but because he just doesn't seem as corny. Nowadays I'm not feeling the shit he does, but all of the shit he spits here is vintage. The entire album has Tech ripping shit up. I seriously can't get enough of his incredible rapping here. The energy is non stop. The producers on here aren't big names but I think the basic drums work well with the dark night time background melodies. There are a couple inconsistencies here, tracks 6 and 7 and the opening track, but there are 3 classic bangers to make up for it. Sure the album is a little long, but it stays pretty consistent for the whole listen and the sound doesn't change too much. Although, "Now It's On" doesn't have the dark sound to it (kind of a surprise after all the laid back tracks) as it's more energetic sounding. This is an album that is quite hard to get into. It may seem boring at first, but if you keep listening you will get into the songs over time! Now it's an album I love. An enjoyable listen and it is much better than his newer material. Quit being a sleeper and check the damn thing out. Who cares if the beats are "generic", they work fine here. Not quite as good as his next one, "Anghellic" but not too far behind!
I never would have expected something such as this from Tech. This is like a combination of E-40 and Mac Mall, not strange enough to be 40, not gangsta enough to be Mall. Anyway, Tech does the West Coast thing, but not really gangsta pretty well. No MDMA references that I noticed, Caribou Lou was at a minimum, an the beats were heavy ass bass g funk love. Also, the Petey Pablo choruses are missing, so I really enjoyed this shit, just sounds like a particularly skilled West album.
The title of first Tech N9ne release "The calm before the storm" couldn't describe better the whole vibe of this album. It shows how His music and style evolved from album to album. This was just the calm and simple stuff if you compare it to the later storm on "Anghelic". There's a strong and deep G-funk sound on whole this release. "Planet Rock 2K" sounds a little bit different and more experimental like His later stuff, but there aren't many unique sounds on this cd, and it's not the same like in the future albums. This is straight and simple West coast g-funk sounding stuff, and it sounds great!! Tech doesn't show His mad skills over here, He is more calmer and it fits great for the deep basslines. His crazy spitting rhyming style will shocked everyone later, for "The Calm... " He prefered to keep things like this and He made a good choice. Overall I really enjoyed His early stuff, it's just a little bit differrent or maybe just standard piece of rap from Tech.
