So you want to start raiding Tomb of Sargeras, but you don’t have enough gear. Well you’re in luck! Patch 7.2 and 7.2.5 made it relatively easy to get caught up so you can jump right into the new raid.

Tomb of Sargeras LFR requires 860 to queue while dropping 885 gear, so I’d say around 20 item levels below where you’re wanting to raid is a good start. PUGs are notorious for overly high gear requirements in order to blow through the raid, but guild and progression groups will be more lenient. For reference, these are the Tomb of Sargeras item level drops so you know roughly what you need to get to:

LFR: 885 (Kil’jaeden 895)Normal: 900 (Kil’jaeden 910)Heroic: 915 (Kil’jaeden 925)Mythic: 930 (Kil’jaeden 940)

Broken Shore

The Broken Shore is probably the best and easiest way to gear up. Two vendors sell gear for Nethershards, which you can farm in a variety of ways. Warmage Kath’leen sells Dauntless gear tokens in most slots for 400 Nethershards each. Dauntless gear starts at 850 but can upgrade higher. You also have a chance to get Dauntless tokens from killing rares on the Broken Shore, as loot on the last boss in the Legion Assault scenarios, and from the Legionfall Recompense bags when you turn in Legionfall War Supplies. With a full set of Dauntless gear and two 970 legendaries, you should be at the point where you can queue for Tomb of Sargeras LFR. Legion Assaults also drop one piece of 860 gear from the final boss in the scenario.

Thaumaturge Vashreen sells the much higher and more expensive Relinquished gear, which starts at 880 item level and covers all slots including relics. Relinquished gear tokens can turn into any gear for that slot from dungeons, Nighthold, or world bosses. Yes, you can even get an 880 Unstable Arcanocrystal. Tier 20 gear and legendaries are also on the loot table. The legendary rate from Relinquished tokens is very small, but it’s a way to target specific legendary items for that slot. Tomb of Sargeras gear, however, cannot be acquired from Relinquished tokens.

Raids and Dungeons

LFR is also a viable gearing option since it’s fast and easy to get into. Nighthold LFR will be the easiest to queue for with regards to effort and gear level ratio. It only requires ilvl 835, which should be relatively easy to get, and drops 855-865 gear depending on the boss. Other difficulties of the previous raids are also an option and drop much higher gear, but aren’t as reliable as far as availability. Nighthold groups may still be going but not many groups still run Emerald Nightmare or Trial of Valor, though sometimes there will be quick Normal or Heroic runs just for legendary chances.

Normal or Heroic dungeons aren’t a great way to reliably gear up, but they can help you get to a point where you can queue for other, more lucrative options. Doing multiple Mythic+ keys, however, is decent for gear because they are essentially unlimited as long as you have a group to do them. The higher you go with keys, the better the gear level. At the next weekly reset, you’ll receive one piece of gear in your Mythic+ Grand Challenger’s Bounty cache at a slightly higher item level than the highest Mythic+ dungeon you completed that week.

World Quests

Gear from World Quests isn’t that great, but it’s good for filling in slots that may be low or you’re having a hard time upgrading. On the other hand, World Quests are especially good for relics since they’re often hard to get. The item level of World Quest rewards starts out low, at 805 for a fresh level 110, but it rises as your overall item level rises. The base item level caps out at 860, but the amount they can upgrade to via Titanforging or Warforging was increased with the release of Tomb of Sargeras. You also get an equivalent piece of gear from your emissary caches.

World Bosses

These also aren’t exactly a reliable method for gearing, but it doesn’t hurt to go do them. The regular world bosses in the Broken Isles can drop 860 gear. You can also use a Seal of Broken Fate if you really want something from their loot table. When the Nether Disruptor building is up on the Broken Shore, an additional world boss will spawn there who can drop 900 gear.

BOEs and Crafted Gear

If you have a decent amount of gold, you can outfit your character with raid BOEs or crafted gear. The raid BOEs can fill four different slots and drop out of all four raid difficulties, so they can be any item level. They are also able to Titanforge, Warforge, and add tertiaries or sockets. Prices will definitely vary on each server according to any bonuses they have.

Tomb of Sargeras (890-955)Nighthold (860-955)

Crafted gear now starts at 850 item level, and can be upgraded all the way up to 900. But in order to upgrade, you need Obliterum and Blood of Sargeras. The crafted trinkets are still really strong, so I would suggest upgrading those to their fullest potential. The other gear isn’t really worth upgrading, since it can be easily replaced by other gear — unless you happen to be swimming in Obliterum or gear to obliterate. Crafters can also create legendary crafted items for each armor type, but these are bound to be pricey and are only worth getting if you don’t already have two legendaries for your class.

Upgrade Legendaries

Last but not least, upgrade any legendaries you had before Tomb of Sargeras released. If you don’t know where to get Writhing Essences or how long it will take, we have a handy guide. Seriously, that jump from 910 or 940 to 970 will help a lot. If you’re a returning player or brand new alt and don’t have any legendaries yet, your first two will come quickly and really increase your overall item level. Good luck!
